One of my fun jobs as a volunteer at the Lawrence Memorial Library is "processing" books. This entails making jackets (paper and polyester), to help preserve them.
Today, I discovered a beautiful children's book among the to-be-covered pile: Sulwe written by Lupita Nyong'o (star of Black Panther, 12 Years a Slave, among other films). It's about a little girl who feels alone because her skin is darker than those in her family and in her school. In the story, she goes on a journey that changes her view of herself.
If you have little ones or if you like children's books, get this one. It's got a wonderful message and Vashti Harrison's illustrations are exquisite!
